Too many people are not getting to their desired retirement age with sufficient capital

How to build income and wealth for retirement: 1. Identify the obstacles

Preparing for retirement is a crucial part of financial planning which has a significant impact on your personal future and how your lifestyle can be maintained in later life.

The information in this Guide is not a recommendation or advice to invest or change your financial strategy. This should only be done with the support of a regulated financial advisor.

For a multitude of reasons achieving an adequate or even generous income in retirement has become progressively more challenging to achieve.

So why is it such a problem now and what can we do to change the future to gain more financial freedom and security?

Obstacles building up a retirement ‘nest egg’.

Too many people are not getting to their desired retirement age with sufficient capital to provide them with a necessary level of income to sustain their lifestyle.

Some of the many reasons can include:

  • Pension scheme: weak or negative growth in a pension scheme driven by high charges and low investment returns.
  • Career pattern: changes in employment that deliver inconsistency in the growth of your pension pot throughout your working life.
  • Investments and savings: outside your pension are not providing enough profit.
  • Tax: changes to taxation and increased costs of holding buy-to-let property resulting in reduced returns for many investors.
  • Pension changes: switching from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes are generally far less favourable.
  • Low income: not earning enough (or consistently enough) to put aside capital needed for the income in retirement.
  • Reliance on assets: waiting for capital growth to create investment returns which then have to be sold to generate an income stream.

The overall result of these issues is a growing band of prospective retirees who realise their pension pot falls short of what they hoped for.
